Flat plate, ready for a spin

01.06.18 / DTM / Warm-Up

Nicknamed the 'flat plate' due to its topography, what the Hungaroring lacks in inclines it certainly makes up for with numerous fast curves and directional changes. The good grip that the relatively new tarmac provides makes for an exciting race; one that the spectators will appreciate as they enjoy the top visibility from the high stands surrounding the track.

For Schaeffler driver Mike Rockenfeller, this track is not a bad place. Of his five starts here, he has twice narrowly missed out on a podium place, finishing fourth on these occasions.

An absolute eye-catcher

Rockenfeller is not only a top-caliber racer but also a real eye-catcher. The 2013 champion, in his new flashy green and white Schaeffler Audi RS 5 DTM has made up a total of 14 positions in the four races held to date: the highlight being his second place on the opening weekend at Hockenheim.

Hungary will host races five and six (out of a total of 20) this weekend, where Rockenfeller will hope to advance from his current standing of tenth overall. The 4.381-kilometer Hungaroring is located about a half hour’s drive north-east of the capital, Budapest. It experienced its DTM debut as far back as in 1988 – while still behind the Iron Curtain. Following a long break, the circuit only recently celebrated its DTM comeback in 2014.

Schaeffler has two plants and a sales office in Hungary. The plant in Szombathely celebrated its 20th anniversary last year. Since the DTM’s return to Hungary, several hundred local Schaeffler employees have been cheering for Mike Rockenfeller along the track every year.

Long DTM tradition

Even in the DTM’s initial years, Schaeffler and its product brands supported drivers and teams with know-how in motorsport and technology. Since 2011 the technology group has been giving its name to the Schaeffler Audi and celebrated major successes including two title wins. In the DTM, cars with internal combustion engines have traditionally been used. This is a field in which Schaeffler makes an important contribution as well with innovative technologies and products to make IC engines efficient and fit for mobility for tomorrow.
